The Taxpayer Advocate Service (TAS) offers a unique opportunity to advocate for taxpayers who experience difficulties with protecting their rights or with hardships in resolving their tax issues. Our employees work on a wide range of issues related to tax processing, taxpayer assistance and improving tax procedures. A Legal Tax Advisor to the National Taxpayer Advocate (NTA), provides independent legal advice and guidance to the NTA on a wide variety of tax issues.
- Identify, research, and write about systemic tax issues for the NTA’s annual reports to Congress.
- Identify, research, and write legislative proposals to change the tax code and propose administrative changes to IRS procedures to make the tax system fairer and more equitable.
- Research and write Taxpayer Advocate Directives (TADs) as well as write blogs about tax issues.
- Advise TAS personnel about novel case advocacy issues and assist in drafting Taxpayer Assistance Orders.
The Taxpayer Advocate Service Attorney Advisory Group Legal Tax Advisor serves as the National Taxpayer Advocate’s
representative within the Taxpayer Advocate Service (TAS), as well as with IRS executives and officials on TAS cases. You’ll participates in conferences and meetings, in addition to preparing written presentations with other agencies, universities, non-profit organizations, and public interest groups, involving qualitative and quantitative research issues of considerable consequence to TAS and the IRS.
The Legal Tax Advisor also provides qualitative and quantitative research and writing on topics of tax law and administration, and analyzes problems in tax administration throughout the IRS and helps select 10 “most serious problems” encountered by taxpayers to include in the National Taxpayer Advocate’s Annual Report to Congress.
Prepares an analysis of the most frequently litigated tax issues in the Federal courts during the preceding year for the National Taxpayer Advocate’s Annual Report to Congress.
